BEGIN YOUR JOURNEYHelp your child start at the right level
Observe before choosing a target
Notice whether your child recognizes letters, reads joined letters or can already read a short passage. Share this with the teacher, but let the trial establish the starting point. Age alone does not tell us reading level.
Make the first lesson comfortable
For a young learner, have a parent nearby to help with sound, materials and joining the meeting. Give the child time to answer. Reading for them can hide the very difficulty the teacher needs to hear.
Use one correction at home
After a lesson, ask which short exercise should be repeated. A parent can help the child find the assigned line and listen patiently without guessing pronunciation corrections. Bring uncertain sounds back to the teacher.
Look for practical progress
Useful signs include recognizing a previously confused letter, applying a vowel correctly or reading an assigned phrase with fewer prompts. Page completion and speed alone do not show that a skill is secure.
Questions to bring to the trial
Ask what the child should practise, how long a manageable practice session might be and how feedback will be shared. Confirm a timetable the family can sustain rather than choosing the busiest plan.
